Tye Dye Pashmina and Silk Shawl

Craft

Our shawls are composed of 80% Chyangra cashmere (which is used for the weft yarn) and 20% silk (used for the warp). The characteristics of this blend has several advantages from being stronger than goat hair, it can tolerate a lot more tension as it is heavier and allow them to drape very well, as well as have a slight sheen.

The master weavers source the yarn from Inner Mongolia and spin them in Nepal. The ateliers purchase the wool from Mongolia, as they are now the leading producers of fine pashmina wool.

Material

The wool is obtained from different varieties of sheep known in the Himalayan Region (above 14,000 feet) which is their natural habitat but for Pashmina, it is sheared from the Chyangras (Capra Hircus), a type of mountain breed of goat. The wool is carefully sheared from the under belly of these goats. In addition to wool they supply the people with nutrition and warmth. The fleece is composed of two layers of hair, that protect the animal from he extreme cold temperatures of the himalayan pastures. The interior hair is the most precious as it is composed of very fine high density short fibres that form a heat regulating function. This wool is about 1 inch long, near the skin of the animal to protect is from the harsh winters and is of the best quality and called pashmina. Come spring time, when the goat sheds it’s wool, it can supply around 150-200 grams of Chyangra Pashmina. The fibre measures 15 microns in diameter.
